Today's Discussion Is About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original sizes and shape. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatments, or when a huge filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be needed. Even after a filling is put in a big cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Remember that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth go through incredible pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against damage. A damaged or split tooth is a far more serious matter and much more tough to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with producing a nice smile.

It takes two visits to recover a tooth with a crown. In the very first appointment any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A short-term crown is worn during this time. In the 2nd visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment normally requires 2 appointments. Your first appointment will include taking impressions that will be utilized to develop your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to produce a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for roughly 2 weeks until your brand-new crown is made by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and forming the surface area to effectively fit the crown. When these details are accomplished, your short-term crown will be positioned with short-term cement and your bite will be inspected to ensure you are biting appropriately.

At your 2nd appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be thoroughly placed to make sure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to inspect your crown. As always, appropriate oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
