Crowns are synthetic caps, normally made from a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are generally used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually ended up being so advanced that large parts of the tooth needs to be taken out, crowns are frequently used to fix the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a broken tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural look.

Procedures

A tooth must typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique lab, which produces a custom-made crown. In many cases, a short-term crown is applied up until the long-term crown is ready. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes mistaken as veneers, but they are fairly different. Veneers are usually applied just to relatively small areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown could last approximately eight years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Particular behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) considerably shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, or even break the crown.

Today Were Talking About:

Root Canal (Endodontic Treatment)

Root canal treatment (also referred to as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is required when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and discover problems early). Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth might also cause the nerve to be harmed to the point it needs root canal therapy. When this happens, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it should be treated, and can not recover on its own. It can even damage the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and may be very uncomfortable. Symptoms that the pulp has actually become infected might consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, discomfort, swelling, discomfort to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no symptoms appear and the person is unaware of any issue up until a checkup.

A root canal is then carried out to clear out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to remove the tooth. As soon as the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any further infection. Usually a core build-up and crown is recommended for bring back a tooth that has had root canal treatment.
