Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth considerably. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical whitening process. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
