Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of most patients, there are numerous methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple methods: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of everyday use. 3 various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and practical lightening process. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
