Today's Conversation Will Be About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the whole tooth surface area restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if restored by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be brought back with a filling. They are most commonly done after root canal treatments, or when a large filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that needs to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Keep in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth go through tremendous pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against damage. A broken or split tooth is a far more serious matter and much more tough to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with producing a nice smile.

It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. In the very first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. In between the two visits the crown is made, normally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A temporary crown is worn throughout this time. In the 2nd visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be used to develop your customized crown. A mold will also be used to create a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for approximately 2 weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by getting rid of any decay and shaping the surface area to properly fit the crown. As soon as these details are achieved, your short-term crown will be positioned with short-term cement and your bite will be examined to guarantee you are biting appropriately.

At your second visit your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be carefully positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to inspect your crown. As always, correct oral hygiene will help extend the life of your brand-new crown.
