Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple techniques: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and practical lightening process. The appointment is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
