Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many clients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use numerous approaches: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
