Crowns are synthetic caps, normally made from a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to fix a tooth's function and look following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has actually ended up being so advanced that huge parts of the tooth must be eliminated, crowns are frequently used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a cracked tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth must typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique laboratory, which makes a custom-made crown. In many cases, a temporary crown is applied till the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes mistaken as veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are typically applied only to relatively little areas.

Caring For Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown could last up to 8 years or longer. It is essential to floss in the location of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Particular habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) considerably reduce the life of a crown. Moreover, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, and even harm the crown.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a metal device created to replace missing teeth. The device is usually made out of titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone where the teeth are missing. An implant is permanent, unlike a dental bridge.

Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures might not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. For some people, dental implants provide a smile that looks and feels extremely natural. Surgically placed below the gums over a series of appointments, implants connect to the jawbone and work as a base for bridges or a denture, individual replacement teeth.

Implants provide stability since they connect to your bone, a process called osseointegration. Integration of these implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit is more comfortable than traditional substitutes. Candidates for dental implants have to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant.

What's Involved In Getting A Dental Implant?

A dental implant might be an option to replace a missing tooth. In this treatment, a little titanium shaft is surgically {placed|implanted into the bone and allowed to set. The bone grows around it forming a tight connection, which in addition slows or stops the bone loss that happens when the root of a natural tooth is missing. As soon as the implant is securely embeded in the mouth, the dentist then works to attach the replacement tooth onto the top of the shaft. This permanent option has the advantages over bridge work that it does not need the surrounding teeth for support, and, should the tooth wear out, another can merely be replaced on the shaft.

Implants can also be used as support as part of an implant bridge. This is an option to partial dentures, and has multiple benefits. First, there is no adjustment period to acclimatize the client who, once the work is done, only feels teeth, not metal supports intruding into the mouth. Second, this slows the bone loss occasioned by missing teeth. Third, there is no discomfort or trouble in eating. And, best of all, of course, they don't need to be taken out all the time.
