Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many patients, there are multiple methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of everyday use. Three different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment because it is so simple and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays ought to be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
