Today's Topic Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Because tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 various strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really quick and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment because it is so easy and fast!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
