Today's Topic Has To Do With:

Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is essential when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and discover problems early). In some cases deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also cause the nerve to be damaged to the point it requires root canal treatment. As soon as this happens, the pulp becomes infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it should be treated, and can not heal on its own. It can even damage the entire immune system. This is dangerous, and may be really agonizing. Symptoms that the pulp has become infected might consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no signs are apparent and the person is unaware of any problem up until a checkup.

A root canal is then performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. As soon as the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any more infection. Normally a core build-up and crown is suggested for bring back a tooth that has actually had root canal treatment.
