What Are Same Day Crowns?

Same day crowns are a new technology that a dental expert can financially restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a top quality ceramic product that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling device in one instrument. The dentist uses a unique camera to take an precise photo of the broken tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD innovation to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and immediately creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dental practitioner bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The entire procedure takes about one hour.

Exactly What Does This Innovation Mean For A Patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer need to produce temporaries or take impressions and send them to a laboratory. Because of this, the traditional second appointment has been eliminated. This brand-new innovation has more than 10 years of clinical research and documentation to support it. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and reliable.

Today's Topic Will Be:

Fillings

Fillings are done to eliminate decay, and replace the affected tooth structure. It is called a filling since new material fills the hole that the decay left. Now days most teeth are treated with bonded tooth colored composite resin fillings. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If not treated, decay can cause tooth discomfort and/or infection, and the tooth would need a root canal treatment or extraction.

There are 2 types of fillings; amalgam or silver fillings, and composite or white fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored to blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth. Most dentists provide both types of fillings, but find that many of their clients like the composite fillings.

The term composite refers to the actual filling material which is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium.

Composite fillings supply great durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth, and this may lead to a smaller sized filling than with of an amalgam.

In addition, composites are "bonded", or adhesively attached, to the tooth, often allowing a more conservative repair for the tooth. Composite fillings require that the tooth be kept clean and dry throughout the entire filling process and they undergo stain and discoloration with time. The life expectancy of a white filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite.

Composite filling material is also typically used to repair front teeth that have chipped or worn. Where possible, esthetic bonding of composite material to front teeth is usually much cheaper than veneers or crowns. However, bonding normally does not last as long as veneers or crowns.
