What Are Single Visit Crowns?

Same day crowns are a new innovation that a dental practitioner can economically bring back broken teeth in a single appointment using a top quality ceramic product that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) innovation, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate photo of the broken tooth. This optical impression is downloaded and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and instantly produces the restoration while the client waits. Finally, the dentist bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What Does This Technology Mean For A Client?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, suitable with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer have to develop temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second appointment has been eliminated. This new technology has more than 10 years of medical research and documentation to support it. The restorations have actually been proven accurate, safe and reliable.

Today's Subject Is:

Temporal-Mandibular Joint

TMJ stands for temporal-mandibular joint. Temporal, as in temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; joint as in it's where the head and jaw meet. Problems in this joint might be caused by a misalignment of the teeth, injury, or excess muscle stress. Aside from the two bones that meet there, cartilage buffers them and five muscles are associated with the area. If something fails a good deal of trouble can result.

Problems in this area can trigger:

  • Earaches.

  • Headaches.

  • Pain in the jaw muscles.

  • Trouble or soreness in opening and closing the mouth.

  • Soreness in the area, often extending to the face.

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw.

Dental treatments for the condition can consist of replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting the bite, filling spaces between teeth, and so on. There is no one solution that is right for all cases. In some cases a plastic mouth piece is utilized to prevent clenching or grinding that is adding to the problem. If neglected and required to extremes, surgery might be needed to fix a severely damaged joint.
