Crowns are artificial caps, typically made of a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to bring back a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has become so advanced that huge parts of the tooth has to be eliminated, crowns are frequently used to fix the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a cracked tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural look.

Procedures

A tooth must generally be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique laboratory, which manufactures a custom-made crown. In some cases, a temporary crown is applied up until the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are sometimes mistaken as veneers, but they are rather different. Veneers are typically applied just to relatively small locations.

Caring For Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown might last approximately 8 years or longer. It is essential to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) considerably shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, eating brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even break the crown.

Same Day Teeth Restorations

CEREC means CERamic REConstruction and is a tool in our office that can take accurate digital imagery of locations requiring restoration and produce the proper restoration on the spot.

With our CEREC cad/cam machine, you can have your crown or other restoration completed in just one visit. We will create and custom fit your tooth precisely with our computer system milling unit right in the office. You no longer need to have a temporary crown or wait weeks for the lab to fabricate your crown.

CEREC can be used for a broad range of indications: posterior crowns, anterior crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays and partial crowns.

Today Were Discussing:

Dental Bonding (Composite)

Bonding is a treatment in which we apply a tooth-colored composite material to a tooth, shape it, allow it to solidify, and polish it. It can be used in specific scenarios where a tooth has actually been broken or become stained. These are typically small repairs, ones that can be resolved through this relatively inexpensive means instead of through a more pricey dental treatment.

Here Is How It Works:
Bonding involves adhering composite resin material that is matched to the color of the tooth, to the front of the tooth. This is done to fix damage done to the tooth by decay, to modify the positioning of the tooth, close spaces between the teeth, or for cosmetic purposes. First the surface area of the tooth is roughened in order to accept the bonding and hold it. A gel is applied to micro etch the tooth surface area, and a primer/bond agent is used so the material sticks to the surface area. Then the material itself is put on the tooth and hardened with intense light. The composite resin material is formed and polished to get a shiny finish as a last step.
