Crowns are synthetic caps, typically made of a material like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are generally used to bring back a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has become so advanced that big parts of the tooth should be taken out, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a split tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth has to be brought back to its natural appearance.

Treatments

A tooth should generally be decreased in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique lab, which manufactures a custom-designed crown. Sometimes, a short-term crown is applied until the long-term crown is prepared. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are usually applied just to relatively little areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With correct care, a good quality crown might last up to 8 years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Particular behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps break the crown.

Today's Conversation Is About:

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a metal device designed to replace missing teeth. The device is normally constructed of titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone where the teeth are missing. An implant is permanent, unlike a dental bridge.

Crowns and traditional bridges or dentures may not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. For some people, dental implants provide a smile that looks and feels extremely natural. Surgically placed below the gums over a series of visits, implants fuse to the jawbone and act as a base for bridges or a denture, individual replacement teeth.

Implants offer stability due to the fact that they fuse to your bone, a procedure called osseointegration. Integration of these implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit is more comfortable than traditional alternatives. Candidates for dental implants must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant.

What Does A Dental Implant Involve?

A dental implant might be an option to replace a missing tooth. In this procedure, a little titanium shaft is surgically {placed|implanted into the bone and allowed to set. The bone grows around it forming a tight connection, which additionally slows or stops the bone loss that happens when the root of a natural tooth is missing. When the implant is securely embeded in the mouth, the dentist then works to connect the replacement tooth onto the top of the shaft. This permanent option has the advantages over bridge work that it does not stress the surrounding teeth for support, and, should the tooth break, another can simply be replaced on the shaft.

Implants can also be utilized as support as part of an implant bridge. This is an alternative to partial dentures, and has multiple advantages. First, there is no modification period to acclimatize the client who, once the work is done, only feels teeth, not metal supports intruding into the mouth. Second, this slows the bone loss occasioned by missing teeth. Third, there is no discomfort or difficulty in eating. And, best of all, of course, they do not need to be taken out all the time.
