Crowns are artificial caps, usually made of a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are typically used to bring back a tooth's function and look following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually ended up being so advanced that large parts of the tooth has to be eliminated, crowns are frequently used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to avoid a cracked tooth from worsening, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth must typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a special lab, which makes a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a short-term crown is applied up until the long-term crown is ready. Permanent crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are in some cases confused with veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are usually applied just to fairly little locations.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown could last up to eight years or longer. It is crucial to floss in the area of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Certain habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, consuming brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, or even harm the crown.

Today's Topic Is:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are numerous methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical lightening process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment since it is so easy and fast!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
