Crowns are synthetic caps, typically made of a product like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to restore a tooth's function and look following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has ended up being so advanced that large portions of the tooth needs to be eliminated, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to avoid a split tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth should usually be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent out to a unique laboratory, which produces a custom-designed crown. Sometimes, a temporary crown is applied up until the permanent crown is ready. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, however they are rather different. Veneers are normally applied only to relatively small areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown might last as much as 8 years or longer. It is crucial to floss in the location of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Particular behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially reduce the life of a crown. Moreover, consuming brittle foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps harm the crown.

Today's Topic Is:

Temporal Mandibular Joint

TMJ stands for temporal-mandibular joint. Temporal, as in temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; joint as in it's where the head and jaw meet. Problems in this joint might be brought on by a misalignment of the teeth, trauma, or excess muscle stress. Aside from the two bones that meet there, cartilage buffers them and 5 muscles are associated with the area. If something fails a good deal of trouble can result.

Problems in this area can cause:

  • Earaches.

  • Headaches.

  • Pain in the jaw muscles.

  • Trouble or soreness in opening and closing the mouth.

  • Soreness in the area, often extending to the face.

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw.

Dental treatments for the condition can include replacing missing teeth, moving teeth, adjusting the bite, filling gaps in between teeth, etc. There is no one solution that is right for all cases. Often a plastic mouth piece is used to prevent clenching or grinding that is contributing to the issue. If neglected and taken to extremes, surgery might be needed to fix a severely damaged joint.
