Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal)
Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is needed when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and detect issues early). In some cases deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also trigger the nerve to be harmed to the point it needs root canal treatment. As soon as this occurs, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).
By the time the pulp is infected it has to be treated, and can not recover on its own. It can even weaken the whole immune system. This is dangerous, and may be extremely agonizing. Symptoms that the pulp has ended up being infected might include sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, discomfort to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Often, however, no symptoms are apparent and the person is unaware of any issue till a checkup.
A root canal is then performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. As soon as the infection is fixed, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any additional infection. Generally a core build-up and crown is suggested for bring back a tooth that has actually had root canal treatment.
