Crowns are artificial caps, normally made of a product like porcelain, put on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are usually used to fix a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When degeneration in a tooth has become so advanced that big portions of the tooth has to be removed, crowns are typically used to fix the tooth.

Crowns are also used to avoid a split tooth from becoming worse, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be brought back to its natural look.

Treatments

A tooth should usually be decreased in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique lab, which produces a custom-designed crown. Sometimes, a short-term crown is applied till the long-term crown is prepared. Long-term crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are sometimes mistaken as veneers, however they are fairly different. Veneers are usually applied just to fairly small locations.

Caring For Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown might last as much as eight years or longer. It is essential to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Certain habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially shorten the life of a crown. Moreover, consuming brittle foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, or perhaps break the crown.

Same Day Tooth Restorations

CEREC stands for CERamic REConstruction and is a tool in our office that can take exact digital images of locations requiring restoration and produce the appropriate restoration on the spot.

With our CEREC cad/cam machine, you can have your crown or other restoration finished in just one visit. We will create and custom fit your tooth precisely with our computer system milling unit right in the office. You no longer have to have a temporary crown or wait weeks for the lab to fabricate your crown.

CEREC can be used for a broad scope of indications: anterior crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, partial crowns and posterior crowns.

Today's Topic Will Be:

Root Canal (Endodontic Treatment)

Root canal treatment (also referred to as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and detect problems early). Sometimes deep restorations or trauma to a tooth might also trigger the nerve to be damaged to the point it requires root canal therapy. When this takes place, the pulp ends up being infected, and can even extend through the root tip and start to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it should be treated, and can not recover on its own. It can even deteriorate the whole immune system. This is dangerous, and may be extremely agonizing. Symptoms that the pulp has become infected may consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets, pain, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Often, however, no signs appear and the individual is unaware of any problem up until a checkup.

A root canal is then performed to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and disinfect the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to extract the tooth. When the infection is fixed, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any additional infection. Normally a core build-up and crown is recommended for restoring a tooth that has actually had root canal therapy.
