What Are Single Visit Dental Crowns?

Same day crowns are a new technology that a dental expert can economically bring back damaged teeth in a single visit using a top quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling device in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the broken tooth. This optical impression is downloaded and shown on a color computer screen, where the dental practitioner uses CAD technology to create the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically produces the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dentist bonds the brand-new restoration to the surface area of the old tooth. The entire procedure takes about one hour.

Exactly What Does This Innovation Mean For A Patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, suitable with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dental practitioners no longer need to develop temporaries or take impressions and send them to a laboratory. Because of this, the traditional second appointment has actually been eliminated. This new innovation has over 10 years of clinical research and documents to support it. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and reliable.

Today Were Talking About:

Fillings

Fillings are done to remove decay, and replace the affected tooth structure. It is called a filling since new material fills the hole that the decay left. Now days most teeth are treated with bonded tooth colored composite resin fillings. Caught early enough, cavities can be treated easily and painlessly. If not treated, decay can result in tooth discomfort and/or infection, and the tooth would need a root canal treatment or extraction.

There are two types of fillings; amalgam or silver fillings, and composite or white fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored to blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth. Most dentists supply both types of fillings, however find that a number of their clients prefer the composite fillings.

The term composite refers to the actual filling material which is a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium.

Composite fillings supply great durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that have to endure moderate chewing pressure. Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth, and this may lead to a smaller sized filling than with of an amalgam.

In addition, composites are "bonded", or adhesively connected, to the tooth, often enabling a more conservative repair for the tooth. Composite fillings require that the tooth be kept clean and dry throughout the entire filling procedure and they undergo stain and discoloration with time. The life expectancy of a white filling can depend significantly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite.

Composite filling material is also frequently utilized to repair front teeth that have chipped or worn. Where possible, esthetic bonding of composite material to front teeth is typically much more economical than veneers or crowns. However, bonding usually does not last as long as veneers or crowns.
