Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are multiple ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment because it is so easy and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
