Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its initial sizes and shape. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, or is too broken down to be restored with a filling. They are most typically done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling wears out. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth undergo tremendous pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against damage. A damaged or cracked tooth is a much more severe matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with producing a good smile.

It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. In the very first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in producing a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic product, or gold. A short-term crown is used throughout this time. In the second visit this temporary crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and after that cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown procedure usually needs two visits. Your very first visit will consist of taking impressions that will be used to produce your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to produce a temporary crown which will remain on your tooth for around two weeks till your brand-new crown is produced by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by getting rid of any decay and shaping the surface to effectively fit the crown. Once these details are achieved, your short-term crown will be put with short-term cement and your bite will be checked to guarantee you are biting properly.

At your second appointment your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be thoroughly positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are precise.

You will be given care directions and encouraged to have routine dental check ups to check your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
