Today's Topic Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are a number of ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and practical bleaching process. The appointment is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and quick!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
