Today's Conversation Will Be About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling breaks. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a large cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth undergo remarkable pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and protecting the tooth against damage. A broken or cracked tooth is a far more severe matter and far more difficult to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with making for a good smile.

It takes two appointments to recover a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in fabricating a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A temporary crown is used during this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

Exactly What Does Getting A Crown Involve?

A crown treatment usually needs 2 appointments. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be utilized to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to produce a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for approximately two weeks up until your brand-new crown is made by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and forming the surface to effectively fit the crown. When these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be positioned with temporary cement and your bite will be examined to guarantee you are biting correctly.

At your second appointment your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental visits to examine your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
