Today's Discussion Will Be About:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are multiple ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth bleaching system that will lighten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists use numerous techniques: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and quick!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
