Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many clients, there are numerous ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and practical lightening process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
