What Are Single Visit Crowns?

Same day crowns are a brand-new innovation that a dentist can financially bring back damaged teeth in a single consultation using a high-quality ceramic product that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does It Work?

Same day crowns use a CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and a milling machine in one instrument. The dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate photo of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dental practitioner uses CAD technology to develop the restoration. Then CAM takes over and instantly creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the dental practitioner bonds the brand-new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What Does This Technology Mean For A Client?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dental practitioners no longer need to develop temporaries or take impressions and send them to a laboratory. Because of this, the traditional second appointment has actually been removed. This new technology has more than a decade of scientific research and documents to support it. The restorations have been proven accurate, safe and reliable.

The Conversation Of The Day Is:

Root Canal (Endodontic Treatment)

Root canal treatment (also described as root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is needed when a cavity is allowed, through neglect, to reach all the way to the root pulp. (Regular cleanings and checkups prevent and identify problems early). In some cases deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also trigger the nerve to be damaged to the point it needs root canal therapy. As soon as this happens, the pulp becomes infected, and can even extend through the root tip and begin to eat away at the surrounding bone (this is an abscess).

By the time the pulp is infected it needs to be treated, and can not heal on its own. It can even deteriorate the whole immune system. This is dangerous, and may be very painful. Symptoms that the pulp has ended up being infected may consist of sensitivity to hot/cold or sugary foods, discomfort, swelling, pain to biting or pressure, and a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes, however, no signs are apparent and the individual is unaware of any issue till a checkup.

A root canal is then carried out to clean out the infected tooth pulp, and decontaminate the canals of the tooth. The only other treatment would be to remove the tooth. Once the infection is dealt with, the canal(s) are filled in to prevent any additional infection. Typically a core build-up and crown is recommended for recovering a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
