Today's Conversation Will Be About:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its initial shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if recovered by fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be recovered with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a large filling wears out. The bigger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a huge cavity, a tooth is more likely to break. Bear in mind that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the body. Teeth go through remarkable pressures. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth, offering strength and protecting the tooth against damage. A damaged or cracked tooth is a much more serious matter and much more hard to treat. Crowns prevent this, along with producing a good smile.

It takes two visits to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the first appointment any decay is removed from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in making a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, normally of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A temporary crown is used during this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment typically needs two appointments. Your very first appointment will consist of taking impressions that will be used to create your custom-made crown. A mold will also be used to develop a short-term crown which will stay on your tooth for around two weeks up until your new crown is produced by a dental lab.

While the tooth is numb, the dental practitioner will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and shaping the surface to appropriately fit the crown. When these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be positioned with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to guarantee you are biting correctly.

At your 2nd visit your short-term crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully positioned to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care directions and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to check your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
