Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many clients, there are a number of methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth whitening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient lightening process. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment because it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
