Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are multiple ways to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use numerous methods: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of everyday use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really quick and practical whitening process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment since it is so easy and quick!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
