Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are numerous ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will bleach teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient lightening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment since it is so simple and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
