Crowns are synthetic caps, typically made of a product like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to restore a tooth's function and look following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large parts of the tooth needs to be taken out, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth should normally be decreased in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique laboratory, which makes a custom-made crown. In many cases, a temporary crown is applied till the permanent crown is prepared. Long-term crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are sometimes confused with veneers, but they are fairly different. Veneers are usually applied just to fairly little areas.

Caring For Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown might last as much as eight years or longer. It is very important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Particular habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly reduce the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming brittle foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, and even harm the crown.

Today's Topic Will Be:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of most clients, there are a number of ways to bleach teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth significantly. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use multiple methods: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very fast and hassle-free bleaching process. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment because it is so simple and quick!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
