Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous methods: customizeded tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient lightening process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment because it is so simple and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
