Crowns are artificial caps, typically made from a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are normally used to fix a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually ended up being so advanced that large portions of the tooth has to be taken out, crowns are typically used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a broken tooth from worsening, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are applied when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural look.

Procedures

A tooth should usually be decreased in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique laboratory, which makes a custom-made crown. In many cases, a temporary crown is used up until the long-term crown is prepared. Permanent crowns are sealed in place.

Crowns are sometimes mistaken as veneers, but they are fairly different. Veneers are typically applied just to relatively small areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown might last up to 8 years or longer. It is crucial to floss in the location of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Certain behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) significantly shorten the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, or even break the crown.

Today's Subject Will Be:

Ultrasonic Tooth Cleaning

We use ultrasonic scalers for most adult dental cleanings. These devices utilize ultrasonic vibrations to help breakdown the plaque and calculus on the teeth that cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. The ultrasonic cleaners create tiny bubbles that implode on the surface of the tooth, killing microbes and removing plaque and tartar in the process. Our instruments use a thin tip to better navigate in the periodontal pockets to help keep optimal gingival health.

  • The treatment only uses water, no chemicals are used.

  • It can eliminate tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas, without any damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Manual scaling frequently uses pressure for cleaning, while the vibration produced by the scaling tip of an ultrasonic scaler is barely noticeable. This makes ultrasonic cleaning appropriate to those with sensitive teeth.

  • The cleaning procedure is quicker than manual scaling making your visit more comfortable.

After your teeth have actually been cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner, your teeth will be hand scaled to check for any residual deposits and then polished.
