Today We Will Be Reviewing:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many patients, there are multiple ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Because tooth bleaching just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use numerous methods: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and practical whitening process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and fast!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
