Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many patients, there are a number of ways to bleach teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Because tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple techniques: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical lightening procedure. The appointment is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
