The Conversation Of The Day Is:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are numerous methods to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize multiple techniques: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of everyday use. Three various strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and practical whitening procedure. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment since it is so easy and fast!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
