Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of clients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will bleach teeth considerably. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is essential to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient lightening process. The appointment is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
