Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many patients, there are a number of ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth significantly. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.
Most dentists use multiple methods: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray method involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory makes into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is advised for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take multiple months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really quick and convenient bleaching process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays must be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
