Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of the majority of clients, there are numerous ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will bleach teeth significantly. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the greater the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
