Crowns are artificial caps, typically made of a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are usually used to fix a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually ended up being so advanced that big parts of the tooth must be eliminated, crowns are typically used to fix the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a split tooth from becoming worse, connect bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is in jeopardy of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as an aesthetic use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural appearance.

Procedures

A tooth must typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made from the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique lab, which produces a custom-designed crown. In many cases, a temporary crown is applied till the long-term crown is prepared. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are in some cases confused with veneers, but they are rather different. Veneers are typically applied only to fairly small areas.

Taking care of Your Crowns

With proper care, a good quality crown could last approximately eight years or longer. It is extremely important to floss in the location of the crown to prevent excess plaque or collection of particles around the restoration.

Specific habits such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) substantially reduce the life of a crown. Moreover, eating hard foods, ice or hard candy can compromise the adhesion of the crown, and even damage the crown.

Today We Will Be Talking About:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many patients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will bleach teeth dramatically. Because tooth bleaching just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. 3 various strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take numerous months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient bleaching procedure. The visit is around one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
