Today's Conversation Will Be About:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of many clients, there are numerous ways to whiten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Because tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists utilize numerous methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see considerable color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a extremely quick and practical whitening procedure. The visit is roughly one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment due to the fact that it is so easy and fast!

Tooth bleaching is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be used every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
