Today's Discussion Is About:

Tooth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are numerous methods to whiten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use multiple methods: custom made tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The entire process takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the higher the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a very quick and convenient whitening process. The visit is roughly one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients like this treatment because it is so easy and quick!

Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up might be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be utilized every couple of months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
