Because having whiter teeth has now become the top aesthetic concern of many patients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will whiten teeth significantly. Since tooth lightening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the newly bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous approaches: custom made tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory fabricates into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of daily use. 3 different strengths of gel might be utilized, however, the higher the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is advised for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a extremely fast and convenient bleaching process. The visit is approximately one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays ought to be used every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
