Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of many clients, there are a number of methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth whitening system that will lighten teeth considerably. Since tooth bleaching only works on natural tooth enamel, it is necessary to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize numerous methods: custom made tray whitening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the laboratory produces into customized vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of everyday use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the greater the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is recommended for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take multiple months of use to see considerable color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a really quick and convenient lightening process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients enjoy this treatment due to the fact that it is so simple and fast!
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For upkeep of whitened teeth the trays should be utilized every few months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of external tooth layer.
- Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
