Today We Will Be Discussing:
Tooth Whitening
Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of most patients, there are multiple ways to lighten teeth. The most popular method is utilizing a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth considerably. Since tooth lightening just works on natural tooth enamel, it is very important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after lightening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists utilize multiple approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office bleaching.
The tray approach involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is put in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of day-to-day use. 3 different strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the greater the probability of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray approach is suggested for terribly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very fast and convenient bleaching process. The appointment is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients love this treatment since it is so simple and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be utilized every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
