Because having whiter teeth has now become the primary aesthetic concern of a lot of patients, there are multiple methods to lighten teeth. The most popular technique is using a home tooth bleaching system that will whiten teeth significantly. Because tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, and so on. Replacement of any restorations will be done after whitening so they will match the recently bleached teeth.
Most dentists use numerous approaches: customizeded tray bleaching, professional strength white strips, and in-office lightening.
The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab makes into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole process takes about a week of day-to-day use. Three different strengths of gel may be utilized, however, the greater the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray technique is suggested for severely stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take a number of months of use to see significant color improvement.
Our in-office treatment is a very quick and hassle-free whitening process. The visit is approximately one hour including both the preparation and treatment. Our clients love this treatment since it is so easy and quick!
Tooth lightening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays need to be used every couple of months.
Reasons For Tooth Whitening:
- Yellow, brown stained teeth.
- Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
- Florousis (excessive fluoridation throughout tooth development).
- Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, and so on).
