The Topic Of The Day Is:

Dental Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that covers the entire tooth surface area restoring it to its initial sizes and shape. A crown protects and reinforces the tooth structure giving the tooth a longer life span than it would have if brought back by fillings or other kinds of restorations.

Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is most likely to break, or is too broken down to be brought back with a filling. They are most frequently done after root canal treatments, or when a big filling wears out. The larger the hole made by a cavity that has to be treated, the more likely a crown will be required. Even after a filling is put in a huge cavity, a tooth is most likely to break. Remember that the jaw muscles are the strongest in the human body. Teeth are subjected to incredible pressures. Crowns sit over the weakened tooth, providing strength and securing the tooth against damage. A broken or cracked tooth is a far more serious matter and far more difficult to treat. Crowns prevent this, as well as producing a good smile.

It takes 2 visits to bring back a tooth with a crown. In the very first appointment any decay is eliminated from the tooth and it is formed to accept the crown. Then an impression is made of the tooth for use in making a crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, typically of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold. A short-term crown is worn throughout this time. In the second visit this short-term crown is removed. Then the {permanent crown is adjusted as needed and then cemented in place.

What Does Getting A Crown Include?

A crown treatment typically requires two appointments. Your very first visit will consist of taking impressions that will be utilized to create your custom crown. A mold will also be utilized to create a short-term crown which will remain on your tooth for around 2 weeks until your brand-new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by eliminating any decay and forming the surface to correctly fit the crown. As soon as these details are accomplished, your short-term crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to guarantee you are biting correctly.

At your 2nd appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your brand-new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care guidelines and encouraged to have regular dental check ups to examine your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
