Crowns are artificial caps, typically made from a product like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth.

Crowns are generally used to bring back a tooth's function and look following a restorative treatment such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has actually become so advanced that huge portions of the tooth needs to be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.

Crowns are also used to prevent a cracked tooth from worsening, attach bridges, cover implants, or an existing filling is at risk of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve as a visual use, and are used when a discolored or stained tooth has to be restored to its natural appearance.

Treatments

A tooth should typically be reduced in size to accommodate a crown. A cast is made of the existing tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to a unique laboratory, which manufactures a custom-made crown. In many cases, a short-term crown is used till the long-term crown is ready. Long-term crowns are cemented in place.

Crowns are in some cases mistaken as veneers, but they are quite different. Veneers are normally applied only to relatively little areas.

Caring For Your Crowns

With appropriate care, a good quality crown could last approximately 8 years or longer. It is extremely important to floss in the area of the crown to avoid excess plaque or collection of debris around the restoration.

Certain behaviors such as jaw clenching or bruxism (teeth grinding) considerably reduce the life of a crown. Furthermore, consuming hard foods, ice or hard candy can jeopardize the adhesion of the crown, and even damage the crown.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a metal device designed to replace missing teeth. The device is normally made out of titanium and is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. An implant is permanent, unlike a dental bridge.

Crowns and traditional bridges or dentures might not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. For some people, dental implants provide a smile that looks very natural. Surgically placed below the gums over a series of appointments, implants connect to the jawbone and serve as a base for bridges or a denture, individual replacement teeth.

Implants provide stability since they fuse to your bone, a process called osseointegration. Integration of these implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people also find the secure fit is more comfortable than traditional substitutes. Prospects for dental implants must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant.

How Involving Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant might be an option to replace a missing tooth. In this procedure, a small titanium shaft is surgically {placed|implanted into the bone and allowed to set. The bone grows around it forming a tight connection, which in addition slows or stops the bone loss that happens when the root of a natural tooth is missing. As soon as the implant is firmly set in the mouth, the dentist then works to attach the replacement tooth onto the top of the shaft. This permanent solution has the advantages over bridge work that it does not stress the surrounding teeth for support, and, should the tooth break, another can simply be replaced on the shaft.

Implants can also be used as support as part of an implant bridge. This is an alternative to partial dentures, and has numerous benefits. First, there is no adjustment period to acclimatize the patient who, as soon as the work is done, only feels teeth, not metal supports intruding into the mouth. Second, this slows the bone loss occasioned by missing teeth. Third, there is no discomfort or difficulty in eating. And, best of all, of course, they do not have to be taken out all the time.
