The Discussion For Today Will Be:

Teeth Whitening

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of the majority of patients, there are multiple ways to bleach teeth. The most popular technique is utilizing a home tooth lightening system that will whiten teeth considerably. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the freshly bleached teeth.

Most dentists use numerous approaches: customizeded tray lightening, professional strength white strips, and in-office whitening.

The tray technique involves having impressions taken, which the lab fabricates into custom-made vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes to a full hour. The whole procedure takes about a week of daily use. Three various strengths of gel might be used, however, the higher the strength, the higher the possibility of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it might take a number of months of use to see substantial color improvement.

Our in-office treatment is a really fast and convenient whitening procedure. The visit is around one hour consisting of both the preparation and treatment. Our patients like this treatment since it is so easy and fast!

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required once a year and more often if you smoke and/or drink coffee, tea, or wine. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays must be used every few months.

Reasons For Tooth Whitening:

  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

  • Normal wear of external tooth layer.

  • Florousis (extreme fluoridation during tooth development).

  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
